ROMANS AND REIVERS

Introduction
The county of Northumberland has some of the best researched and best preserved remains of the Roman occupation of Britain. Explore the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall set in the beautiful landscape of Northumberland National Park.
Half Day
The choice is yours. Enjoy a guided tour around the evocative ruins of Roman forts at Chesters, Vindolanda, Corbridge or Housesteads and see how soldiers stationed on the north west frontier of the Roman Empire lived, worked and played 2,000 years ago. Make an instant connection with the people of the past as you learn about the world famous Vindolanda Writing Tablets whilst at Chesters fort try and imagine Maximus and his friends enjoying the warmth of the military bath house all those centuries ago.
Full Day
Combine a visit to a Hadrian’s Wall site with Corbridge village where a range of characterful pubs and cafes offering tasty refreshments await. This attractive village also has boutique and craft shops which may prove just too tempting to resist.
If time allows, the day can also include a visit to historic Hexham Abbey, a living, working church with a compelling historic story.

GRAND DESIGNS & GARDENS

Introduction
Fine country houses and gardens go hand in hand in North East England. Some of our stately homes are still lived in by families who can trace their ownership back hundreds of years. Others have beautiful gardens to stroll around, dream in and be inspired by.
Half Day
Get the gardening bug with a visit to The Alnwick Garden, a contemporary landscape masterpiece which brings you one step closer to gardening heaven. A guided tour will set the scene before you take time out to simply “smell the roses”. Learn ever-fascinating plant lore in the Poison Garden before watching the Grand Cascade water feature. Or get bamboozled in the bamboo maze.
A short stroll from The Alnwick Garden leads to Alnwick Castle. This “Windsor Castle of the North” is no museum but the home of the Percy family who came into ownership some 700 years ago. Here is a castle quite literally English history in stone. The lavish State Rooms contain wonderful works of art, fine furniture and craftsmanship and are admired daily by Ralph Percy, 12th Duke of Northumberland and his family as well as by you, the visitor.
Full Day
Combine a visit to Alnwick Castle with a journey to Cragside House and Gardens. It would be nice to be sufficiently wealthy to afford an extension to your already grand house simply because you were about to entertain royalty. In the late 19th century the owner of Cragside House did just that. And because he was the prosperous local industrialist, Lord Armstrong, he was also inventive enough to equip his house with modern conveniences. Visit this “palace of a modern magician” to marvel at his achievements in the world of science and technology. The grounds of Cragside are a fine example of Victorian planting.

THE LAND OF THE PRINCE BISHOPS

Introduction
To the south of the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne lies County Durham “Land of the Prince Bishops” who, for more than 800 years, effectively ruled the county as an independent state.
Half Day
At the heart of County Durham is the historic gem of Durham City. The modern day American writer Bill Bryson described Durham Cathedral as “best Cathedral on planet earth” and a guided tour of its interior will focus on the Cathedral’s magnificent architecture, art and Christian heritage. At this World Heritage Site lies the last resting place of two of the most important figures from this region’s early Christian development: St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede. Stop for photographs outside Durham Castle, once the home of the mighty Prince Bishops, and stroll through the city’s picturesque streets as your guide leads you through the fascinating story of this university city.
Full Day
County Durham is a county which wears its industrial heritage with pride. So combine a visit to Durham City with a visit to multi-award winning Beamish Museum where the past comes to life. Set in over 300 acres of lovely countryside Beamish vividly recreates life in North East England in the 1800s and 1900s. From 2019 a new area of the Museum site will be developed to highlight life in the 1950s. Travel around this open air Museum by vintage tram and visit the 1913 Town area to see how the professional classes lived, worked and played. Across at the Colliery village take a guided tour into the drift mine or stay above ground and visit the school and Methodist Chapel. Beamish Museum is a window on the past where costumed guides are on hand to welcome and interact with the visitor.
